Travelling with ashes (cremated remains)

Evermore Funerals can help you transport ashes (cremated remains) internationally or domestically.

Are you planning to travel with cremated remains? Here are some handy tips.

Transporting Ashes on a Flight

If you are carrying your loved one's ashes yourself, you will need a 'Travel Letter", which is basically a certificate that accompanies the ashes. These can be issued by the crematorium, and attest to the fact that the plastic ashes urn (pictured above), which is supplied by the crematorium, only contains human remains. We can help you arrange a Travel Letter. Most countries you'll travel to require a sealed cremation urn accompanied by a Travel Letter, and sometimes a statutory declaration from the crematorium as well. We suggest carrying the ashes container in your carry-on hand luggage, as it simplifies the process with customs officials and reduces the risk of mishandling by the airline. If you are in doubt, we always recommend you contact the airline and ask them what requirements they have.

Professional Ash Transport Services

You might prefer to have the ashes sent by courier. We work with reliable freight companies to ensure the safe arrival of your loved one's ashes. Our team can:

  • Manage all documentation

  • Ensure the ashes are securely packaged

  • Coordinate with freight companies on your behalf

  • Provide respectful and secure transport for the ashes

PLEASE REMEMBER: Not all destinations permit cremated remains. Many countries have restrictions that prevent ashes from being brought into their borders. We will investigate the specific requirements for your destination and inform you if transport is feasible before proceeding with any arrangements. If it is not possible to carry the ashes in carry-on luggage, it is usually possible to deliver them using a reputable courier.
